Lakewood Soccer Player Assessment Process

Lakewood Soccer does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, national origin or religious affiliation. We seek to place athletes, with similar desires and objectively assessed abilities, together to maximize their enjoyment and development.

The assessment sessions will be scheduled over several weeks beginning shortly after the registration. All players will be invited to a minimum of 2 assessments with other players in the same age group and gender. The 1st session will be not be sorted by previous assessments, so there will be players with various skill levels at the session. After the 1st assessment a preliminary sorting will be done so that the 2nd assessment session will have players with similar abilities.

When players show up for the assessment session they must check in at the registration table. The players are randomly placed on teams for the assessment. Each assessment session will be led by the Lakewood Technical Team, potentially including some Huskie Soccer players. There will be a minimum number of evaluators for each session. Although evaluators may be allowed to assess players in the same age group as their child, they are not allowed to assess their child or participate in discussions about the performance of their child. Each evaluator will independently fill out an assessment of each player. Before the end of the session the group of evaluators will reach a consensus on the rating for each player with the Technical Team Lead holding the deciding vote if necessary.

After the session has been completed, the results will be compiled by the Technical Director for the next assessment session or for final team selection.

Lakewood Soccer Player Assessment Categories

  • Technical (movement, passing, ball control, shooting)

  • Tactical (positional play, awareness, game understanding)

  • Physical (agility, balance, coordination, speed, fitness)

  • Overall Ranking will be a combination of the above 3 categories

It is the goal of Lakewood Soccer to form teams and place players in the best fit possible primarily for the individual player. The best fit includes where that player might experience the best opportunity to be successful at his stage of development and be most comfortable in order to enjoy the game as much as possible.

Lakewood Soccer Player Eligibility

You must reside within Lakewood’s boundaries (U11/U13 and U15) in order to attend the evaluation sessions and to be able to play for Lakewood Soccer.

Permission to Play Out of Zone

Players who reside outside Lakewood’s zone may attend Lakewood evaluations, however in order to play for Lakewood, a player must first register in their appropriate zone and then apply for a Permission to Play out of Zone transfer. Although you may ask for permission to play out of zone, it may not be granted. Releases must be approved by the zone in which you are registered. A link to the Permission to Play out of Zone document is provided below:

Age Category Requirement

Athletes are required to be evaluated within their appropriate age category. Players will not be allowed to attend evaluations other than in their appropriate age category but under special circumstances, a player may be recommended to be evaluated in another age category either older or younger. This recommendation will come from the Lakewood Technical Team.

Assessment Absences

Each athlete is offered and encouraged to attend both Assessment Sessions. Dates and times for an athlete’s 1st assessment will be posted by Lakewood Soccer and will be emailed once registered. Athletes will be informed of their 2nd assessment session after all of the 1st round of assessments for their age category have been completed. While we encourage parents to ensure athletes can attend both assessments, Lakewood understands that circumstances occur where athletes are unable attend one or both assessments.

  • Absent from 1st Assessment session:

If for any reason an athlete is unable to attend the 1st round of assessments, if possible they will be scheduled into another initial assessment or they will be scheduled into a 2nd round of assessments. When applicable, the Technical Team will choose an appropriate placement for assessment based on player’s history playing with Lakewood. However, if a player has missed the 1st assessment, it would not be unusual for that player to be assessed with players who they typically have not played with in past seasons. An athlete may be asked to join additional assessments or practices by the Technical Team and should be prepared to join additional assessments either that day or at another scheduled time.

  • Absent from 2nd round of Assessments:

If a player attended their 1st assessment but is absent from the 2nd assessment, that player will be assessed and placed on a team based on the results of the 1st assessment. A player may be asked to join additional assessments or practices by the Technical Team at another scheduled time.

  • Absent from both Assessments:

A player who misses both assessment sessions will be asked to join one or more practices where the Technical Team will be present. A recommendation will be made by the Technical Team on an appropriate placement for that player. If a player has missed both assessments, it would not be unusual for that player to be assessed with other players who they typically do not play with in past seasons. In all circumstance related to assessments, decisions made by the Lakewood General Manager and the Technical Committee will be considered final. If you have questions about the assessment process please contact the General Manager manager@lakewoodsoccer.com
